Beta Chi Commemorative Scholarship for a Member & Award for an Outstanding Student Teacher
These are given in memory of our Beta Chi Sisters who have passed away. Each year different Sisters will be commemorated through this scholarship and/or award. We are remembering Helen Many, Sharon Muth, Brenda West, Betty White, and Shirley Corey
The Scholarship for Members supports the Personal and/or Professional Growth of our Active and Retired Members by funding opportunities such as, but not necessarily limited to: Attendance at DKG Conferences and Conventions, STEM Master Teacher costs, Board Certification, Certification Testing Fees, and Content Specialty Conferences and Conventions.
The Outstanding Student Teacher Award will alternate between our Commemorative Award and the Doris Bovee Student Teacher Award (see below). The application process will be the same for both student teacher awards with our Scholarship Committee determining the funding source each year.

Experience CTAUN: Sheila Mahady Scholarship
*This scholarship is given to a member who is a first time attendee of the
CTAUN Experience.
Sheila Mahady was a pioneer in introducing Beta Chi Members to CTAUN (Committee for Teaching About the United Nations). As a professional educator and constant mentor, Sheila encouraged members to become global thinkers on worldwide topics. Sheila held numerous leadership roles at both the state and local levels in Beta Chi.

Gladys Hamilton Classroom Project Grant-in-Aid
*This grant, in memory of Beta Chi's first president, is given to a current Beta Chi member to help with expenses of a classroom project.
Gladys was a “hands on” elementary teacher for many years at Calvin U. Smith. She frequently provided inservice programs for mathematics known as the “ Make and Take Workshop.” Gladys was a presenter at state level conferences and served as an officer.

Two Awards in Memory of Doris Bovee
Doris Bovee was a graduate of Alfred University and Elmira College. She was an elementary teacher for the Corning-Painted Post School District having taught at Severn, Smith, and Lindley-Presho Elementary Schools. Doris was a president of the Corning Teachers’ Association and a co-president of the Corning Teachers’ Association Retirees. She was a longtime member of Delta Kappa Gamma and served as president of our Beta Chi chapter. Doris valued education and was always supportive of young women entering the field of education.
1. Doris Bovee Outstanding Student Teacher Award
This award is given to an Outstanding Student Teacher during the present school year. Candidates must be sponsored by a Beta Chi member.
Candidates must:
- demonstrate a natural ability for teaching
- demonstrate a willingness to seek out opportunities to learn and grow
- show a commitment to teaching through involvement in total school activities
- create a positive learning atmosphere through the use of motivating lessons, creativity, etc.
- demonstrate good oral and written communication skills

2. Doris Bovee AWARD (For a Woman Returning to or Continuing her Studies in Education)
Applicants for this Award must be sponsored by a Beta Chi member and must satisfy at least one of the conditions below.
1. A female who had her education interrupted or is from another profession and is now pursuing a career in education, including certification as a teaching assistant
2. A female college student in the field of education in the 3rd or 4th year of undergraduate or graduate study
3. A female who is a research and/or college teaching assistant in the field of education.
